We all need to make sure that we have a way to exercise and stay fit, but it’s not always incredibly convenient to head out and go for a jog every day. For this reason, a lot of health-conscious individuals invest in a treadmill. This gives you a great way to simulate going for either a light jog or a vigorous run (depending on your fitness level, of course) without ever leaving the comfort of your own home. Treadmills are great for keeping yourself in excellent shape, but they can also be a little bit dangerous if you aren’t careful. It’s important that you observe important safety guidelines when you have a treadmill your home, so we’ll talk about five of the most useful treadmill safety tips.

1. Get to Know Your Treadmill. Before you set your new treadmill up, it’s important that you know everything it can do. Try spending a little bit of time with the user’s manual so that you can be familiar with all the most important features and settings. Not only will this help you get the most out of your new piece of exercise equipment, but it will allow you to adjust settings or turn the machine off quickly should the need arise.

2. Don’t Let Your Treadmill Define Your Workout. You should always set goals for yourself so that you can make sure you’re constantly improving as you work out, but make sure these goals are safe for you. Don’t let you treadmill tell you when to stop working out. You can — and absolutely should — cut a workout short before the timer has run out if you’re not feeling well.

3. Dress for Safety. Your clothes are a huge part of your safety when you’re on a treadmill. You don’t want to be wearing anything that’s excessively baggy, but also shouldn’t wear clothes that are movement-restrictive. Get sneakers that were designed for walking or running, and make sure to tie the laces tightly. If these get caught in the motor or under the belt, you can experience a very serious accident.

4. Increase and Decrease the Speed Slowly. Be sure that you start your treadmill slowly, then get on and increase the speed to your desired level. Similarly, it’s important that you lower the speed gradually. Suddenly stopping an aerobic workout like running or jogging can strain your heart and make you feel very dizzy.

5. Store It Safely. Make sure you keep your treadmill in a safe place so that it’s not a danger to anyone when you aren’t using it. Remember to unplug it any time it’s not in use, so that nobody can turn it on accidentally. The less risk your treadmill poses when you aren’t using it, the better. With all these tips in mind, you should have no trouble using your treadmill to stay in great shape, while being safe all along the way.
